In part 2 of this powerful episode of PCOS Unfiltered, Lindsie sits down with holistic nutritionist and wellness consultant Laura Heflin to explore what it really means to heal your relationship with food, your body, and your health. After years of restrictive dieting, hormonal imbalances, eating disorder struggles, and personal health challenges, Laura shares how everything shifted when she stopped trying to control her body—and started listening to it instead. Together, they unpack the truth about intuitive eating, the dangers of rigid diet culture, and why sustainable health requires both structure and flexibility. From meal planning and metabolism to nervous system regulation, setbacks, and cycle-based nutrition, this conversation challenges the idea that there is one “right” way to heal. They also dive into the emotional side of healing—why progress isn’t linear, why the scale doesn’t define your health, and how reconnecting with your purpose can be the missing piece in creating lasting change. If you’ve ever felt stuck, overwhelmed by conflicting health advice, or disconnected from your body, this episode will help you slow down, tune in, and start trusting yourself again.
Your body is not broken.
Your symptoms are not random.
And sometimes, the most powerful thing you can do for your health…
✨ is learn to trust yourself again.

(0:00) That's my number one principle, actually, in my book is don't start something today, (0:04) you cannot do the rest of your life. I have 10 lifestyle principles. And that's my first one, (0:12) because I just believe if it's not sustainable, you shouldn't start it today, because it will (0:16) backfire. You can simply ask the question, can I do this every day till I'm 85 years old? Yes, (0:21) or no, if not, don't start it. It doesn't mean don't do something that's going to require (0:27) discipline, like prep meal prepping, but I mean, something that deep down, you know, is not right. (0:33) But you're just so hoping to get the results so quickly, because we live in this dopamine (0:36) hijacked world. That's like, welcome back to PCOS unfiltered, where we go beyond the diagnosis (0:44) and start asking deeper questions about our health, our habits, and the messages our bodies (0:49) are trying to send us. I'm your host, Lindsie, nurse turned health coach, mindful eating advocate (0:55) and author of healing beyond the diagnosis. Today's episode is such an important conversation, (1:00) because we're talking about something that so many women struggle with, but rarely feel safe (1:05) talking about openly our relationship with food, our bodies, and the pressure to constantly follow (1:11) the next best health trend. My guest today is Laura Heflin. Laura is a holistic nutrition and (1:18) wellness consultant, author and host of the live healthy with Laura podcast. Through her work, (1:24) she helps people rebuild trust with their bodies, reconnect with nourishing foods, (1:29) and step away from the rigid fear based approaches to health that so many women have been taught.
(1:35) Laura's journey into this work is deeply personal. After experiencing major health (1:40) challenges from a young age, including surgery, hormonal imbalances, cystic acne, (1:46) an eating disorder, depression, miscarriages, and eventually a diagnosis of adrenal PCOS. (1:53) She found herself searching for answers beyond what traditional medicine alone was offering.(1:58) Through years of learning, healing, and listening more closely to her own body, (2:03) Laura discovered something powerful. The body often knows exactly what it needs, (2:07) but we've been conditioned to stop listening. In this episode, we talk about Laura's journey (2:13) through eating disorder recovery, hormonal healing, PCOS, miscarriages, and chronic (2:19) symptoms that didn't make sense at first. We also dive into intuitive eating, the dangers of rigid (2:25) diet culture, the role of stress and the nervous system in hormone health, and how learning to (2:30) trust your body can transform the way you approach food, energy, and healing. This conversation is (2:36) full of powerful reminders that your body is not the enemy, healing is not linear, and sometimes (2:42) the most important step in your health journey is learning how to listen again. As a reminder, (2:47) the content shared on PCOS Unfiltered is for informational and educational purposes only.(2:53) The views and opinions expressed by the host and guests are not intended to serve as medical (2:58) advice. The information shared is based on personal experience and expert (3:09) interviews and is not a substitute for professional medical guidance. So, let's get into it. Here's (3:15) my conversation with Laura Huffman. So, with the intuitive eating, maybe personally or even, (3:30) you know, whatever you see with your clients, but what are kind of some of the mindset shifts (3:33) that you see, you know, like I said, going back to your story, or maybe that you've seen with (3:39) your clients as far as that journey of, you know, do they wake up every day and say, (3:43) okay, you know, do they follow that and say, what does my body need today? I'm sure there's (3:47) some ups and downs along the way, kind of what's the mindset shifts that need to happen? (3:52) So I think we have to be careful to not, we need to plan and then not over plan. And so what I mean (3:58) by that is we don't want to become so rigid that we're not able to change something up in our day, (4:04) but we do want to have a plan in place. Because what happens is, our life gets very busy and (4:09) chaotic, all of ours do, right? And so we want to take away something called decision fatigue (4:15) within the middle of our week. And so I do map out my entire week on Fridays, as I'm (4:20) making my grocery list and making my meal plan.I mean, intuitively, I'll be like, okay, (4:26) I'm going to be inching towards my cycle next week. So I should be adding in some more iron, (4:30) you know, more red meat, some more grounded root vegetables to give you energy. You know, (4:35) so I intuitively meal plan, my lunches and our dinners, and my breakfast, though, (4:40) stay about the same. And so I think, for me, I like to be simple as possible. So if I know (4:46) one breakfast helps me feel my best, I will play on the weekend when I have more time and make (4:51) gluten free French toast or something. But I am like, my breakfast looks the same.I'm happy to (4:56) tell you what that is, if you want. But it's just one of those things that I feel like if you can (5:02) take out the guesswork, you should, but you should never be so rigid, that you're not able (5:07) to change it up within that day. For instance, if I'm like, okay, well, tomorrow's meal sounds (5:11) better today for dinner, I'm going to switch it up.I don't know, just intuitively sounds better.
(5:16) I'll stop the days, I think we need to be not overly rigid, because that's the diet culture (5:22) speaking where that really that cortisol starts to rise. And we feel like a failure if we don't (5:27) stick to the plan.So I think, yeah, I mean, I think be intuitive when you're meal planning, (5:34) but then give yourself that flexibility to say, I don't know, for some reason today, (5:40) I don't know, organic pear sounds better than organic blackberries with my breakfast, you know, (5:45) it's okay to like, change up your fruits and vegetables, you know what I mean? So but then, (5:50) of course, have your list, I actually have a file in my phone where I keep certain foods that my (5:55) body is triggered by, just so I never forget. And so I think it's important to say, like, look, (6:00) I am going to be very intentional to not stack too many high histamine foods in the day, (6:05) I'm just not. And so that means we're going to be thinking about when I'm meal planning, (6:10) okay, I'm having histamine on this one meal.So I'm not going to have it the rest that day.
(6:15) You know, I hope that answers your question. But it's, it's, it's like planned, but not rigid.(6:22) Yeah, no, I, yeah, I think that does. That's, that's very helpful. I feel like listeners would (6:27) find that very helpful, too.Because again, like, even like we're talking about the, (6:30) the calorie count in the macro counting and all that stuff. It's the same, you know, (6:34) same thing, you don't want to stress yourself out more. (6:38) And one day, you're not going to be as hungry, and you won't require as much energy input. And (6:42) then the next day, you might be more hungry. And then if you don't listen to what your body's (6:47) asking of you, your metabolic thermostat will slow down. And so I think one thing that you know, (6:54) I help a lot of people with weight loss, but it's like I, there's their metabolism has been (6:59) suppressed for so long, because of these plans that did not allow them to listen to their body.
(7:05) And so I think one thing people don't get when it comes to even weight loss, or just hormone balance (7:10) is your body actually loves flexibility, that actually keeps your metabolism on its toes. (7:15) When you're eating the same thing every day, your metabolism slows down. That's why (7:19) bodybuilders do something called carb cycling, they literally challenge their metabolism. So it (7:25) will speed back up, you know, and so I think we have to understand that, like, weight loss, (7:30) healthy blood pressure, glowing skin, healthy gut, all of that's a natural side effect to just (7:34) listening to your body day, day in and day out. Yeah. (7:38) And I think you said something important there, too, about kind of thinking about where you are (7:42) in your cycle when you're planning out.Yeah, (7:47) we should not be eating this exact same way. In fact, I like literally can't I don't feel good (7:52) eating the exact I mean, I like I said, my breakfast always seem to be about the same. (7:56) But then, um, which is eggs and scrambled and avocado oil with Redmond's real salt, (8:02) organic pepper, I do organic berries every day, but then I'll swap it out with either a pear or (8:07) in the winter or banana or melon in the summer. But like, I'm always having fruit and eggs. But (8:12) then, you know, after that, it's like, I right now I'm eating a lot of fruit veggies. And, you (8:18) know, for where I am in my cycle, that's what I prepped on purpose. And, you know, I need that (8:23) more energy, a little more glucose is your energy can tank around ovulation or before your cycle. (8:28) And so I think we need to eat seasonally as well. And, you know, all of that helps. But (8:33) yeah, like we should. That's the importance of trusting your body and knowing what makes you (8:39) feel good. And I think when I mean, I, I've had people say like, Oh, I can't eat that.I can't (8:45) eat them. Like, well, have you asked your body if you can, you know, they're so afraid of whatever (8:50) it is, because it's been demonized in our culture, but maybe it would make them feel amazing. You (8:55) know what I mean? Like, maybe you do need grass fed butter.Um, you know, maybe maybe you're (9:01) that was actually something that helped heal my hormones is adding healthy fats. And I was so (9:05) deprived of, of that my cholesterol was ridiculously low, or I wasn't able to make (9:11) hormones. So it's just, yeah, it's not hard, but it is hard in our world that tells us (9:17) we can't listen to ourselves, if that makes sense. We're kind of (9:21) vacillate. Yeah. Well, yeah, that takes me right to the next question. Why? You know, (9:26) why do you think that is? Why do you think we've kind of been conditioned? You know, not to ask (9:31) those important questions about our health? Um, you have to follow the money. And I really mean (9:38) that because if you look at our ancestors 100 years ago, then none of this existed, (9:44) they lived off the farm, they went to bed when it was dark, they, they socialize face to face, (9:50) they lived in a way that, you know, disease had not was not where it is today. I mean, (9:55) I'm not saying we of course, we had some hard times and saying I'd want to go back then.
(9:59) But I will say, like, you have to follow the money, because any trends, if you look in the (10:05) past 30 years, not only has 99.9% of them fail and come with a lot of court cases down the road, but (10:13) they are literally programming you to follow their program, like they're programming your (10:18) brain to think you're a failure if you don't follow their program. And they're programming (10:22) you to tune out your body. So and I use this example all the time, because this is something (10:27) that is reoccurring.I have women or people message me clients of mine. Hey, Laura, this is (10:33) what I ate today. Did I eat too much? Okay. And I'll say the words back to them. I don't know (10:39) because I don't live in your vessel. So I want you to ask yourself that. And it's it's not me not (10:45) trying to help them. I want them to actually take ownership and actually know they're allowed to ask (10:51) themselves questions. And it's almost like they are so used to not trusting because the diet industry (10:56) is going to every day deliver you a new plan of what you should be doing. No, I should not be (11:01) cold plunging. I don't care how many people tell me I should I will never, I will not. I it's not (11:06) good for me.I will not run. I hate running. So I don't care what's trending anymore. Now I'm so (11:12) like, I like know what my body likes and doesn't like and I do not care. But there was a time (11:19) where I was like, what's the next? Okay, what's she doing? What's he doing? Like, (11:24) um, you know, and so I think again, it's follow the money. And, again, our health, quote, quote, (11:30) health industry does not make money off of your clarity. It doesn't make money off of you knowing (11:34) what your body needs. It makes money off of your confusion. It makes money off of you believing (11:39) without their plan or their product, you will fail. And that is not that is not how God made it (11:46) made us I believe we can ask God for wisdom every day and you can trust your body to guide you.
(11:53) Yeah, yeah. Yeah, I agree. We'll just leave. I get fired up. No, I mean, (12:02) you know, because I was there.I mean, I've seen that side of it. And, you know, from from being a (12:07) nurse, and it's unfortunate. And, and I've said this on other podcasts, I'm like, I'm not here (12:13) to bash because I do think there might be a time and place.I mean, there's obviously definitely (12:17) a time and place if it's a true emergency, right. But as far as more chronic conditions, (12:24) there's still a time and place. But at the same time, that's, it needs to be more of a bridge, (12:31) instead of the final solution, where yes, maybe more about nutrition and intuitive eating (12:37) while you're still taking that medication, because you know, that's not what you want to do for the (12:42) rest of your life, you know, right? That's my number one principle, actually, in my book is (12:46) don't start something today, you cannot do the rest of your life, I have 10 lifestyle principles.(12:53) And that's my first one, because I just believe if it's not sustainable, you shouldn't start it (12:59) today, because it will backfire, you can simply ask the question, can I do this every day till (13:02) I'm 85 years old? Yes or no, if not, don't start it. It doesn't mean don't do something that's going (13:09) to require discipline, like prep meal prepping. But I mean, something that deep down, you know, (13:15) is not right, but you're just so hoping to get the results so quickly, because we live in this (13:19) dopamine hijacked world. That's like, if you're not getting them quickly, you're failing, again, (13:24) that's wrong. But um, ask yourself that question, can I do this every day, the rest of my life? And (13:29) the answer is pretty simple. And normally, you know, (13:33) yeah, I love that.So how do you help clients balance, you know, personal responsibility, (13:40) body trust, grace, especially when healing doesn't follow a straight line, we've talked (13:44) about that ups and downs with your journey. And I'm sure you see that, you know, with your (13:47) clients. So how do you really help them balance all that? You mean, like the setbacks? Yeah, (13:55) a real health journey? Yeah, health is not linear. And here I am working, doing what I do and doing (14:02) what I love. And I still have setbacks. And I still have amazing people like my dear acupuncturist (14:08) friend, Sherry, and my, my holistic practitioner, Karen that helped me stay strong, because there's (14:13) questions as intuitive as I am, that I need help with.In fact, the wellness clinic I work out, (14:19) I found after long COVID, I was so sick. And even though I was still helping people myself and (14:24) working with my own company and my dad's practice, I needed help in a different way. So um, here's (14:30) the thing, the moment we let go of the timeline, when we trust our body to do what it will in its (14:36) right time in the timing that works best for it, you know, it will all pay off, we have to not put (14:42) a timeline on our bodies, we have to understand that it's not going to always be a salmon upstream, (14:48) right? We're not gonna always feel like that. But it's not going to always be like a downhill (14:51) either. Like we're gonna have great days, then we're gonna have days where you know what, (14:56) I think I feel a little off today. And I'm going to pause, I'm not going to freak out.But I'm (15:01) gonna ask why, again, this is back to the body scan that I teach of, let's pause and ask why (15:07) this is functional medicine, this is what this is what they believe this is what I love about (15:11) functional medicine is, there's a reason. So I think we need to stop labeling setbacks as failures, (15:18) but we need to recognize it as just a stepping stone. And there is going, I believe, we can (15:25) learn from every setback. So you know, I'm every year I'm learning different things about my about (15:31) my health. Um, something recently, which was so humbling was I was overdoing mineral water, (15:37) I was drinking all this mineral water in these beautiful blue glass bottles. But due to my (15:42) methylation issues with my gene mutations, like I started feeling anxious. And I had to be like, (15:47) what the heck is happening to me? Okay, Laura, pause. What is one thing you changed? Oh, you've (15:52) been chugging that mineral water, maybe a little too heavy metal, too many heavy metals at one (15:56) time, maybe too many minerals at one time. Didn't mean mineral water was bad, but I was overdoing it.
(16:01) So I'm very humble. And I no longer look at it as a fail. I'm a failure when I have a hard day.(16:06) I think the more we relax around health, first of all, cortisol is equals chronic inflammation, (16:14) it keeps weight on us, it gives us the results we don't want. So the more you relax and just let (16:19) health flow be a willow tree, not an oak tree. And understand every setback comes with a beautiful (16:24) lesson. And it will actually propel you forward, just embrace it, you'll realize, okay, it's all (16:30) okay. It's all okay. And if I hadn't had the setback, I wouldn't be 10 steps ahead where I am (16:36) now.So I look at it as a blessing. And I think we have to reframe. And we have to break up with (16:41) timelines. And we have to know that true results that last typically do require setbacks. And they (16:49) do take time. But the results are so rewarding that, you know, just embrace the process. It's (16:56) what I say. Yeah, it's so true. I mean, I tell my clients about staying off the scale, you know, (17:03) I mean, alone, especially like when you think you're doing all the right things, you know, right?
(17:10) But the scale's not moving. And I'm like, knock it off. If you're feeling better, that's all, (17:16) you know, that's all you need to know. Well, we have to acknowledge body composition.(17:22) And we have to acknowledge the more you actually eat well, and to, you know, you're picking up (17:27) weights, you're going to be replacing adipose, you know, fat, visceral fat with muscle, lean muscle (17:32) mass. And that's not going to always, you know, again, this is I think, I think we're graduating (17:37) to a point where we're like farther. I mean, I think I weigh myself maybe once a month, and not (17:41) even then sometimes, not that I have any, I it doesn't identify, I have no identity connected to (17:47) it anymore.Really, I don't, but I used to I had to throw it out for a long time. I had to really (17:52) be careful with that. But I think we need to realize, you are after energy, you are after (17:57) feeling good, you are after having vitality right within you.And if if you are feeling good, (18:04) you are doing better than 93% of the population that metabolically is malfunctioning right now, (18:10) if you are feeling good. So I mean, if you know, if you have energy, that's huge. That says a lot (18:15) about how you're doing at a cellular level, we need to start celebrating other aspects of health, (18:20) not numbers. And, and I really will say this, it's my clients that I that I've relaxed, (18:27) like we talked about, that weigh themselves less often that start to trust their body and what (18:32) they're asking, it's asking of them, that the weight loss actually happens naturally. But they're (18:37) like, they're like, Oh, I haven't weighed myself all month. I'm feeling good, but I don't know.
(18:41) And they get on the scale if they choose to at my office. And they're like, Wow, I didn't even (18:47) stress about it all month. And like, look, four or five pounds is gone. And I'm feeling better (18:52) than ever, but I didn't think about it. And so again, it's that cortisol component, just learning (18:57) to trust, trust the process. And, but again, we have to start celebrating feeling good.It can't (19:04) just be about a number because I can tell you right now I weighed 20 pounds less, and I was (19:09) the most miserable I'd ever been in my entire existence. And I would not wish that what I went (19:15) through physically, mentally, or hormonally on my worst enemy. So I grateful to be strong today.(19:22) Yeah, yeah. And then surely, you know, if the goal is weight loss for somebody, (19:26) it becomes just a natural side effect. Yeah.Yeah. It's that domino effect that occurs when (19:34) you love and care for your body and your nervous system. Like, if you feel rigid all the time (19:39) around, okay, it's time to eat.And now I'm scared of food. And because I don't know if I'm going to (19:42) do it right? Am I going to eat too much? Am I gonna not eat enough? Like just relax, trust your (19:47) body. And it's like riding a bike or learning another foreign language, you're going to eventually (19:51) be able to pick it up and understand Oh, I know what that Q means.Oh, I know what my body says (19:55) to stop. Oh, I know. You know what I mean? And so it's like, that wasn't that hard. And then all the (20:01) noise of the health space, you kind of can just like, leave, take it or leave it, but it kind of (20:05) fizzles out. Yeah, yeah. As we kind of start to wrap up, what would you say? Like, what's one kind (20:13) of powerful reframe or question that any listener could start asking today to make that shift in (20:20) their healing journey? Um, I think we have to discover know what our purpose is.And when I (20:28) mean that is, okay, if this is only about the scale, of course, you're going to in in in your (20:34) own version, you know, a lot of people say the word fail, you're not going to be successful, (20:37) because you're not living for something greater than you. I believe that one of my biggest driving (20:43) factors for myself and for my clients has been discovering what they were put on God's green (20:48) earth for like God put you on this earth for a purpose on purpose, you are not a mistake.
(20:53) And whatever that purpose is, it's going to require energy. And so if you have that target to focus (21:00) on every day, for me, I have many purposes. But like, being an amazing wife and mom is one of (21:06) them, right? Being a great podcast host, being a great friend, certain things. And I'm like, (21:10) I really want to do my best in this area.So I know I need to feel this way to perform this way. (21:16) Well, think when we remember why we're here. And if we don't, if you don't know, and you're (21:21) listening, just pray and ask God, you will, you will feel it one day you will get that green, (21:26) like that aha moment, like I did that day I was eating lasagna.Okay, I meant to help people (21:30) reframe their relationship with food and their bodies. You know, once you get to that place, (21:36) it's like I can't afford to feel anything but my best. So no longer do you want to give into (21:42) fads that will deprive you of energy. Now you're hungry for energy. Now the goal is energy. The (21:49) goal is to feel your best so you can go out and be the hands and feet of Jesus. That is my testimony.
(21:55) That is my mission. I can't show up and I've tried to show up, believe me, depleted, (22:01) hormonally out of whack, exhausted and depressed none.Nobody liked that version of nobody liked (22:07) that version of me. So I think when you remember why you're here and who you're showing up for, (22:14) you it just you have so much drive. And it makes it less about a silly number on the scale and more (22:20) about you having the inside of you to live out your purpose.Yeah, yeah, I was actually just (22:28) having this conversation with somebody else too. I mean, because it strengthens your, (22:31) you know, your relationship, maybe your marriage, you know, your friendships, (22:36) your kids, it's contagious. And people start to say, Wait, something's different about you.(22:45) Maybe there's hope for me. You know, maybe maybe you can teach me it is contagious. (22:51) Yeah.Well, thank you so much. Last question is, where can people find you and connect with you? (23:01) And you have how many books? (23:04) You have four books. And they're behind me.I have my first one is live healthy with Laura. (23:10) My second one is Mama, you still matter a mom's guilt free guide to physical, (23:14) mental, spiritual self care. My third is a glass half full. It's all about perspective (23:19) and mental health. tuning into God's truth, how can change your perspective change your life? (23:23) My most recent I have, let's see, I think from a copy right here. So I'm very proud of this project.(23:31) Getting it out of the package. So I just had a shipment delivered. It is just jump upside down, (23:37) just jump. It's an overthinkers guide to getting unstuck, gaining traction and taking chances. So (23:44) I do talk about intuitive living in here. Absolutely.Because we will be stuck. We're (23:49) just turning to turning everybody else's voice up and on our own. And not God's voice. So yeah, (23:54) that's all about motivation. It often begins with slowing down, (25:40) paying attention and asking simple but powerful questions like how do I actually feel? What is my (25:46) body trying to tell me? Your health journey doesn't have to be perfect. It doesn't have to (25:51) follow a straight line. And it certainly doesn't have to look like anyone else's.
