(1:25) My guest is Brian Staskel, a biohacking coach and consultant with a focus on (1:29) longevity, human performance, and biological optimization.(1:33) Brian and I actually met locally here in Florida and after our first conversation, (1:38) I knew I wanted to bring him onto the podcast because so much of what we talked (1:41) about came back to something I say here all the time, there is so much more (1:45) that we can learn from our bodies. (1:47) In this episode, we're going beyond some of the topics we typically cover. (1:51) We get into nutrition and gut health, nervous system regulation, (1:56) supplements, biohacking, longevity, and some of the wellness modalities (1:59) you may have heard about.(2:01) Things like the hyperbaric oxygen chamber, red light therapy, PEMF, vagus (2:07) nerve stimulation, infrared sauna, sensory deprivation, and more. (3:11) And let's get curious. (3:13) Here is my conversation with Brian Stasekel.(3:21) So let's talk a little bit about, a little bit more. (3:24) You kind of mentioned already about what Beach Wellness has to offer, but I just (3:31) want the listeners to know like what this stuff is that's out there. (3:36) Yes, not everybody listening is local to where we are in Florida, but they might (3:42) have something available, you know, near them.(3:45) So kind of, let me, let me start. (3:47) What's your, what's your favorite? (3:49) Do you have a favorite? (3:50) I love the hyperbaric oxygen. (3:52) That is probably my favorite modality just because it really tackles all facets of (3:58) health, everything from inflammation, energy production, traumatic brain injury, (4:04) reperfusion injuries.(4:06) It's a form of gene therapy. (4:09) It causes the expression of over 6,000 to 8,000 genes. (4:13) It's, you know, it's natural.(4:14) Just, it's just oxygen and pressure. (4:17) I've seen, I've seen like very profound results from people using hyperbaric oxygen. (4:23) I, I'm one of them.(4:24) I mean, I'm a big advocate supporter of it. (4:27) I use it like every morning and to me, it's like a cup of coffee, honestly. (4:31) It just gives you that like nice energy boost in the morning, but the long-term (4:36) results are what I think is really impressive.(4:39) The, there's a book by a doctor, his name's Dr. (4:42) Harth and it's called the Oxygen Revolution. (4:45) And in it, he has a lot of papers regarding the effects of it on brain injury. (4:51) And, you know, to see people come in there with, you know, brains that are (4:55) degenerating and then after 40 sessions, like we start to see like regions of the (5:00) brain to regenerate, I mean, that's pretty impressive.(5:02) I mean, there's no drugs or peptides out there that really cause it to the, to (5:06) the degree that hyperbaric does it. (5:09) Yeah, probably my favorite. (5:11) Second of that, I really like, I like PEMF.(5:14) I like pulse electric magnetic field therapy. (5:16) I mean, what it's doing to the cell, how it's affecting the polarity. (5:20) Anybody that's listening to this has a background in biology.(5:24) It's, it's literally affecting the binding affinity of proteins and (5:28) peptides to their receptor sites, as well as affecting the, the lipid membranes (5:34) charge, the potential of it, and just to like, I'm sorry, I'm sorry to get too deep (5:39) into the weeds there, what it's kind of doing is it's potentiating the (5:44) charge on the outside of cells. (5:46) You know, every cell in your body has a negative or a positive charge to it. (5:50) An example of that would be like your hemoglobin have, I believe it's a (5:53) negative charge so that whenever two of them come together, they, (5:56) they push away from each other.(5:57) It's a, it's, it's magnetism, right? (6:00) Well, you know, this can help to potentiate the charge outside on the (6:03) membrane so they don't clump up. (6:05) That is just one example of how important these charges are in your body. (6:10) You know, and it affects the trillions of cells in your body.(6:12) And it's really just grounding. (6:14) It's grounding on steroids is what it is. (6:17) But it's also affecting, like I said, the binding affinity of, of (6:20) proteins and peptides to the receptor.(6:22) So the way in which a protein binds to its receptor site and tells the (6:26) cell to do a specific function, you know, it's, it's, it's really impressive stuff. (6:32) So like you were mentioning, like with the, like with the hemoglobin, you said, (6:38) so two negative and like, so obviously those would like repel each other. (6:41) So is there a point where like those, that could break down and then you end up (6:45) with those cells like clumping and that would be then a precursor for like a (6:51) stroke or heart attack or something like that? (6:53) Yeah.(6:54) You'd be more likely to get like a myocardial infarction or that because (6:58) like I said, if you're, if you're, if you're, if your cells are sticking (7:01) together, if red blood cells are clumping, that's, that's a blood clot. (7:05) So we don't want, you know, so it'd be more conducive to preventing strokes or, (7:10) you know, but it's, it's not just affecting your blood. (7:12) Like I said, it's affecting your entire system as well.(7:15) Yeah. (7:15) Yeah. (7:16) Yeah.(7:16) But, uh, yeah, definitely. (7:19) Yeah. (7:20) Uh, I want to talk about the immersion therapy because I mentioned this to you.(7:24) I saw it in an episode of Big Bang Theory, but, but, um, what do you see? (7:29) Like, do you get people that, that regularly, regularly use that one as well? (7:35) Immersion. (7:36) Are you, are you saying the sensory deprivation? (7:38) Or this? (7:38) Yeah. (7:38) Or sorry.(7:39) Yes. (7:39) That, that one. (7:40) So sensory deprivation.(7:41) Yeah. (7:41) We have people that really, really enjoy that. (7:43) A lot of people that enjoy meditation.(7:45) Cause what it kind of is, is a form of meditation. (7:47) What it's doing is it's affecting your nervous system. (7:51) So, um, your, your skin has these things called motor neurons and your motor (7:55) neurons communicate to your spinal cord and your brain that you are touching (7:59) matter throughout the course of your entire existence, you are either (8:02) standing, sitting, or lying on your bed.(8:05) So what happens is, is when you're not making contact with matter, your (8:09) nervous system considers that a foreign feeling, and it puts your (8:11) body into a state of meditation. (8:15) Um, if you're somebody that can't meditate, it will help you with meditation. (8:19) If you're somebody that can, it takes you to a whole different level because (8:22) it's removing the distraction, the sensation of touch from your body.(8:27) Um, it's, I mean, we've had, we've had some guys come in with like, you know, (8:30) PTSD, you know, war vets that really enjoy it because it's like a quiet (8:34) place, place for them to unwind. (8:36) Um, I've, I've done it a few times for me. (8:38) It's, uh, it makes you very self-aware of your body.(8:41) Um, before I had started working at the center, I was recovering. (8:45) I was covalescing from a neck and a back injury that I had (8:48) received from snowboarding. (8:50) And as I was floating in this chamber, it made me more aware of how much (8:54) damage my body had incurred, you know, how much pain I was in because you know, (8:58) you're, you're, when you're not touching anything, like you become (9:01) hyper aware of your, your, your body, you know, I was just like, man, I need (9:05) to, I need to get this issue fixed, you know, and you know, I'm, I'm very glad (9:09) I got the job there because, you know, having access to the modalities (9:12) there have benefited me a lot.(9:14) Um, I mean, I'm, I'm pretty, I'm pretty impressed with (9:17) what those modalities can do. (9:19) I mean, I've tried every supplement, nutraceutical, uh, (9:24) peptide, phytochemical. (9:25) I've tried everything on the market, but I mean, uh, the (9:28) modalities are so effective.(9:30) Really impressive. (9:33) And you, I wanted to mention this in the beginning too, but I forgot. (9:36) Um, because when we, when I came to the facility and we were talking to you, (9:40) you have to remember the quality, right? (9:42) So like I said, we're talking about these things and some people might want to look (9:45) into something like that in their area, but, but the quality of, you know, the red (9:51) lights and stuff, you mentioned the hyperbaric.(9:53) So do you want to touch a little bit on, on that? (9:55) Like that's important. (9:56) So a lot of what we, we do is based on what was shown to be effective in the (10:02) research, the clinical research or the papers. (10:04) Um, a lot of places they, they, you know, they, they go the cheaper route.(10:08) Like a lot of places will have hyperbaric oxygen chambers, but they're not 2.0, which (10:13) is the amount of pressure, the two atmospheric pressures. (10:15) It would be like 1.3. (10:17) And that's because it's cheaper to buy a soft shell tent over buying a hard (10:21) shell, full hyperbaric chamber, or they'll have a red light bed and that red light (10:25) bed will use bulbs, which are much more ineffective in terms of encompassing (10:31) the entire spectrum of red light. (10:32) We use LEDs, so we get near mid and far, you know, it's, it's just, (10:36) it's, it's cost versus efficiency.(10:38) So when we built it, we looked for everything that was efficacious and (10:41) nothing that was backed by French science. (10:44) I mean, we're not doing like oxygen baths or anything that wasn't shown to actually (10:48) really, really affect your body dramatically. (10:51) Um, but yeah, that's, that's pretty much a, that's pretty much what the (10:55) issue is with a lot of these places.(10:56) So I'd recommend doing your research, seeing what they used in their studies (11:00) and then replicating that, finding a place that offers that level of detail. (11:07) Yeah. (11:07) I like that.(11:07) You said that, yeah, you use like the studies and what was used in those (11:11) studies that produced the best results. (11:13) And that's what you guys ended up putting in to the center. (11:17) Yeah.(11:17) Yeah. (11:17) A lot of places they'll use like for, I'll give you an example, like red light, (11:21) right, a lot of places we use panels and, you know, those panels are like (11:24) two, $3,000 a piece, you know, usually stand in front of them. (11:28) You got to like rotate, you know, like kind of like you're lying on a beach to (11:30) really get the effect of the red light.(11:32) Whereas we use a red light bed, which is like, you know, $70,000 bed as to a (11:37) $5,000 panel that wraps around your entire body and gives you a much more (11:42) intense dose of the red light itself. (11:45) Yeah. (11:46) Yeah.(11:46) Yeah. (11:47) I mentioned to you, it looked like a tanning bed, you know, cause I was, I'm (11:49) at that age where that was a big thing back in the day. (11:53) So it reminded me of tanning bed when I first saw it.(11:55) I was like, I don't think they're going to have a tanning bed here. (11:57) Um, but like you said, it's the idea that it does, it wraps around. (12:04) So you get the, the full effect of it.(12:08) Um, what else did you guys have? (12:10) So, yeah. (12:10) So you, of course, like the infrared sauna, um, the halo therapy, right? (12:16) Halo therapy, vagus nerve stimulation. (12:19) Um, I can go over those if you'd like.(12:21) Yeah. (12:22) The halo therapy is just like aerated activated salt. (12:25) So it just goes through a generator and just pretty much kicks out aerosol salt (12:29) into the atmosphere that you can breathe in and it helps a lot with like your (12:33) allergies, um, the, the vagus nerve stimulation is a device that wraps (12:38) around your neck and activates your vagus nerve through your neck, which is (12:41) an evolutionary mechanism built into your body as part of like your (12:45) body's fight or flight response.(12:47) An example I like to give to individuals is if you could imagine you would be (12:51) chased through the woods by a tiger and you escape that tiger, your (12:55) body would be in a state of shock. (12:56) You'd be in fight or flight. (12:58) You're in a cortisol be high, noradrenaline be spiked, um, to keep (13:02) your body from going into shock.(13:04) You'd be breathing in diet. (13:05) You would be breathing in deep diaphragmatically as you breathe in, (13:09) your lungs would hit that vagus nerve that runs along your spine. (13:13) And when that happens, when it makes contact with that vagus nerve, it (13:16) tells your nervous system to calm down.(13:18) So really what it is, is this a way of the modulate your nervous (13:21) system to really calm it down. (13:23) I've seen, I've had individuals fall asleep with it on multiple times. (13:26) Like it really calms you down.(13:28) It's really interesting. (13:30) So yeah, vagus nerve. (13:31) Uh, we have compression therapy, which, you know, it's like these big cuffs (13:35) that go over your arms or legs or hips.(13:37) And what it helps a lot with is the lymphatic system or the way in which (13:41) your body clears away edemas and drains fluids, it just pretty much compresses (13:45) and releases like your legs. (13:46) It would like work up your legs to kind of get the fluid to move out of it. (13:50) Um, a lot of people with, um, you know, polymorphisms with, uh, white (13:54) blood cells, like the use it.(13:56) Cause you know, they have some sort of issue with clearing away these fluids. (14:00) Um, trying to think what else we offer. (14:03) Um, our infrared saunas, another great one.(14:05) Um, Brian Johnson, everybody knows Brian Johnson, right? (14:08) He's a, you know, he's a biohacker. (14:09) He, uh, spends a lot of money on his health and he, I like the (14:12) fact that he, he does a lot of, he conducts a lot of testing on his (14:15) health to see how efficacious this, the modalities he's, he's employing. (14:20) Um, and the infrared sauna, he did a three month study where he, uh, he (14:25) wouldn't, he measured, he measured his toxins levels before and after (14:29) three months, if red sauna, he found that he had lowered his, his, um, (14:34) his toxins in his body by 90%, you know, and that's pretty impressive to be (14:38) able to eliminate microplastics, uh, P U F A's, whatever else is floating (14:44) around the air over there in Los Angeles, just three months of infrared sauna.(14:49) That's pretty impressive. (14:50) And it's, it's a lot, it's, it's superior to like a steam sauna because (14:54) the issues with steam saunas are that they use like city water and city (14:58) water contains a lot of pollutants in that, you know, atrazine, fluoride, (15:01) chlorine, things you don't want to be breathing in or taking into your lungs. (15:05) So it's like a metabolic workout without actually working out.(15:09) You're just sitting there, your body's heating up, it's raising your metabolic (15:12) rate and it's causing you to burn calories without damaging, you know, (15:16) ligaments, joints, uh, stressing your system out. (15:20) So I really liked sauna a lot. (15:22) Uh, we got cold plunge and cryo.(15:23) You know, it helps a lot with like systemic inflammation and lowering (15:26) cortisol gives you a brief dopamine spike, uh, has been shown in studies (15:31) to increase brown adipose fat tissue, which is where some of (15:34) your stem cells are derived from. (15:36) Um, I think, I think I went over most of it. (15:39) I know.(15:40) I was like trying to think too. (15:41) Like hydromassage is another one. (15:43) We like to do hydromassage helps a lot with like your fascia and your body, (15:47) get, you know, get kind of like a deep myofascia massage gets the body to release.(15:52) You know? (15:54) Yeah. (15:55) Yeah. (15:55) So, yeah.(15:56) I mean, and there's so much for, you know, whether you're an athlete, whether (15:59) you're coming, recovering from, you know, a physical trauma, emotional trauma. (16:03) I mean, I think there's so many benefits to, to all of it. (16:07) Right.(16:07) Oh yeah. (16:08) I mean, honestly, I mean, we have everybody from like the (16:12) biohacker to, uh, I mean like cancer patients, uh, people. (16:16) We, I mean, we, we get the whole spectrum in there, you know? (16:19) I mean, we have athletes come in before marathons to do hyperbarics, just to get (16:24) like an edge on their opponents and competition, um, we, we've got people (16:28) coming in there just to recover from chemotherapy, everybody can (16:31) benefit from these therapies.(16:34) Yeah. (16:34) Yeah. (16:35) Yeah.(16:35) That's, uh, that's awesome. (16:37) Yeah. (16:37) I hope like the listeners do look into, you know, if they're interested, like (16:41) look into what's, you know, what's in their area, I think they're becoming (16:45) even more, I want to say more popular, I guess you want to say, but I think (16:51) people are starting to open their eyes to, you know, be open, be more open to (16:56) things like that, uh, to help them on their, on their journey.(17:01) So I do feel like, you know, these centers are, are popping up more. (17:04) I think it's the future of health in general. (17:07) I mean, I think probably in 30 years, uh, wellness centers will be as (17:10) prevalent as gyms are because they're affecting your health.(17:13) Everybody wants to look better and everybody wants to feel better. (17:16) And up until now, the only options you really had were, were, was the (17:20) gym or tanning beds or supplementations. (17:22) Now we have other ways of benefiting your biology, your morphology, making (17:26) your skin look better, more, making you glow more with these modalities.(17:30) They're just like, it's just a new science though. (17:33) You know, it's, it's starting to become more well-known with some of the bigger (17:36) influencers like, you know, Brian Johnson and Dave Asprey have really (17:40) brought to light in the last few years. (17:42) But, um, and as time goes on, more modalities will be discovered and (17:46) added, implemented.(17:48) I mean, really right now, and in terms of health, we're reaching like a, an (17:52) exponential growth, um, and, and longevity and, and life extension. (17:56) I mean, the average human lifespan, I would argue is probably going to double (18:00) in the next 20 to 30 years with what's coming out. (18:03) I've heard that actually.(18:05) I heard that recently that like somebody said that we have, we have all the tools (18:09) to live to like, you know, 150 or something now, like it's, yeah, it's (18:13) crazy when you think about that. (18:15) There's a concept, it's called longevity escape velocity. (18:19) And what it's, what it states is that, um, once we get to the point where you can (18:23) add a year and a day on your life, we will, we will obtain biological immortality.(18:30) And, you know, so I mean, that's, and we're not far off from it. (18:34) Yeah. (18:34) And then, you know, eventually as time goes on, you know, more things will come (18:39) out and we'll reach true immortality in terms of biology, but longevity (18:43) escape velocity isn't too far out.(18:46) Yeah. (18:46) And for me, like, for me, I'm like, I don't mind living that long, as long (18:50) as I have a good quality of life, you know, as long as I can still do, like, (18:54) I understandably, I'm not going to be able to do everything I'm doing right (18:57) now, but I still want to be able to do a lot, you know? (19:00) No, a thought I have about that is you ask a lot of individuals, you (19:04) say, would you want to live forever? (19:05) And a lot of them say no. (19:07) And it has to do with the state of their current being.(19:10) If, you know, you were to ask a younger man or ask, ask a teenager, a preteen, (19:15) if you were to ask them like, Hey, do you want to live forever? (19:17) More than likely they're going to say yes, but that's because the state that (19:20) their body is, is biologically optimal. (19:22) Their dopamine's through the roof, neuroplasticity's through the roof, (19:26) serotonin, they just feel great. (19:28) And it plays a lot into like, you know, if your body's unhealthy, why would (19:32) you want to suffer the rest of your life? (19:34) If, if you're, if you're truly enjoying life, why would you want to end? (19:39) Yeah.(19:40) Yeah. (19:40) That's, that's a great way to put it. (19:42) It is.(19:42) It's a great, great way to put it. (19:44) Cause yeah. (19:44) I mean, if you're just going to be spending it in a doctor's offices, then, (19:48) you know, on the couch and yeah, like the, no, I wouldn't, I wouldn't (19:52) want to, I wouldn't want to live forever.(19:55) Nobody wants to live their entire life with a back injury, you know, (19:59) some sort of terminal illness. (20:01) But like if we could, I think the ideal health you could be in is like when you (20:05) were a teenager, that feeling you got when you would go to sleep at night and (20:09) you'd wake up and you just felt great. (20:11) You felt like you were ready to take on, take on the world, you know, that's the (20:15) state that everybody should try to achieve is like a, you know, the health of adolescence.(20:21) Yeah. (20:21) Yeah. (20:22) I love that.(20:24) Well, that's probably a good way to kind of end this. (20:26) Anything that you, uh, want to wrap it up with or anything I missed? (20:32) Man, we went over everything. (20:35) Just take charge of your health.(20:37) You don't have to, uh, you don't have to settle with how you are now, you know, (20:41) and, uh, definitely expand your horizons, continue searching, you know, um, you'll (20:46) probably become more knowledgeable in the ailment that you're suffering from (20:50) than, than your doctor, because that's what happens, you know, somebody with a (20:54) back injury that's affecting them will, will, you know, spend thousands of hours (20:59) researching back injuries or metabolic disorders. (21:01) So just keep, keep, uh, keep learning, keep educating yourself. (21:07) I love that.(21:07) I love that. (21:08) That's a great way, great way to end.
