#123- What’s Really in Your Skincare? | How Toxins Can Affect Your Hormones (Part 2)

Episode Summary

What if creating a healthier life isn’t about eliminating everything “bad”—but learning how to give your body more of what actually supports it? In Part 2 of my conversation with Jodi Scott, co-founder of Green Goo, we move beyond simply identifying potentially harmful ingredients and talk about practical ways to support your skin, nervous system, hormones, and overall well-being without turning wellness into another overwhelming checklist. Jodi shares her SHAMAN framework for approaching wellness through sleep, hydration, antioxidants, mindfulness, avoidance, and nature. We talk about simple product swaps, reducing everyday exposures, the power of tiny mindfulness moments, why scrolling may not be the break we think it is, and how reconnecting with our senses can help us become more present. We also dive deeper into a conversation women don’t have often enough: intimate skin health, dryness, sensitivity, hormones, and the products we use on some of the most absorbent areas of our bodies.

Body Wisdom Challenge

This week, instead of giving yourself another wellness checklist, practice creating one small moment of presence each day.

The next time you find yourself automatically reaching for your phone, pause.

Maybe you’re waiting in the school pickup line, sitting outside, eating lunch, or simply have a few quiet minutes between tasks.

Instead of scrolling, take 30 seconds to two minutes and notice:

❤️ What can I see around me?

❤️ What can I hear?

❤️ What sensations can I feel in my body?

❤️ What do I notice when I allow myself to simply be here?

❤️ Is there something my body needs right now?

Jodi describes these as small mindfulness moments that can be incorporated throughout the day rather than requiring a long meditation practice.

Remember, supporting your health doesn’t always require doing more. Sometimes Body Wisdom is about creating enough quiet to notice what is already there.

Connect with Jodi Scott

Jodi Scott is the co-founder of Green Goo, a women-founded, family-owned company focused on purposeful, plant-based skincare and first aid. With a master’s degree in health psychology and a background in psychoneuroimmunology, Jodi brings a whole-person perspective to the relationship between the mind, nervous system, immune system, skin, and overall health.

After realizing that the ingredients in her own first aid cabinet didn’t align with the clean lifestyle she was creating for her family, Jodi joined forces with her mother and sister to develop plant-based alternatives. That idea ultimately grew into Green Goo, which began in 2008 and remains women-founded and family-owned.

Episode Transcription

(0:00) Yeah, so I mean a lot of women with PCOS, now PMOS, you know, do experience skin issues. I know (0:10) a big one that I wish I could find more of an expert on, but it's called HS or (0:17) hydradenitis supertiva. There's a big tie to PCOS that I don't think is like well known.(0:25) I know I see it in the ER a lot. I actually have had a guest that had it and she had PCOS, but (0:31) you know, they do experience a lot of skin issues. And I mean, of course, the acne, (0:37) you know, is another big one tied to the excess androgen, you know, the male hormones.(0:44) Could even just be sensitivities, irritation. So, you know, what are some of the like, (0:50) I guess maybe other things that you here see, you know, with everything that you do (0:56) in ways that this can show up in the skin for women, you know, whether it's PCOS or not. (1:03) I love that you bring up HS.We have a number of customers that come to us asking for help there. (1:09) And I'm still looking on how to crack this code. I'm finding that a lot of our customers benefit (1:16) from our eczema oil and then interesting our poison ivy balm. And so trying to understand (1:24) how those herbs are interacting. I will say in the eczema oil, there is a high concentration (1:34) of the chamomile flower. And what we're finding is that the chamomile flower when (1:41) brought in through the skin has some of the same impact of taking it orally is that it (1:47) calms the nervous system. And so it's dropping the cortisol. And then by simply dropping the (1:53) cortisol, we're seeing a positive impact on that reduced inflammation and how it's presenting (1:59) itself in the skin. And so again, kind of like highlighting the deep connection that our skin (2:08) and our nervous system has.And so, yes, we see a lot of the inflammation, the discoloration (2:15) in the skin, the skin irritations, the dry, especially on an intimate level, the dry dryness (2:22) and low sensitivity. And what's interesting in terms of one, eliminating those chemicals, which (2:30) of course, in personal care products, or excuse me, intimate personal care products, it's so (2:34) pervasive. And it's such a highly absorbent area in our skin. And so when you go back to (2:42) rebuilding that microbiome and reducing that inflammation, you also increase (2:48) sensitivity, which is kind of cool and lubrication and moisture just as a direct (2:55) response to feeding the skin the nutrients that it needs and building that microbiome back up. (3:02) So to your point, that's where we're seeing most of it, like the dry skin, and it's (3:08) just chronic and pervasive. And then unfortunately, again, by feeding it the chemicals, the alcohol, (3:17) the parabens, the fragrances, you're just kind of contributing to that negative feedback loop.(3:27) Yeah. So this can get overwhelming for women because there's so many things out there, (3:34) like you've mentioned, what would you say would be like an easy kind of swap before going crazy (3:42) and getting obsessive? And then, because even that can make the skin angry, right? When you (3:45) start removing all this stuff that it's been used to. So what would you say would be like a good (3:50) first step swap to make? Well, of course, I'm partial to clean out your first aid cabinet (3:58) and start there. And then what's great is if you're replacing it with more nutritional skincare (4:07) available to you. In addition to that, your shampoos, your lotion, think about the things (4:17) that you are doing more frequently and start there. So like lotion is a very common one.(4:22) And when you can replace that with a nutritional balm, then that's a major touch point that you're (4:28) having every day. What's fun about nutritional balms and salves too, is that touch is one of (4:36) the first ways to rebuild your vagal tone, which is kind of like your nervous system response time (4:42) to like bounce back. And when you're feeding your body in that lane, then you're also feeding that (4:48) nervous system a little bit more that's helping from a nutritional value. And then I think like (4:54) plastics at home, in your personal care, in your Tupperware, switching to glass and stainless, (5:03) and how you're purchasing your food at the store when you can, eliminating those plastics. That's (5:09) zooming in on just kind of like every day, the things that you touch the most, start there and (5:14) just kind of work your way out. I will say that if we zoom out, a thing that we do in our home, (5:22) because my daughter's 14, she's being inundated with all the things, right? And it's very (5:30) overwhelming to think of your wellness journey. And so we came up with this acronym called SHAMAN. (5:35) And it's like our little North Star. So again, taking that theme of a more holistic approach.(5:43) So S is adding to the sleep bank, which we actually did last night. (5:47) My daughter's getting over a not fun cold that went bad. And I said, okay, everyone, (5:55) how's the sleep bank? We know that we have not been adding to the sleep bank.(6:00) Bites out everyone off their devices, eight o'clock, very intentional. And when you make (6:05) that connection of what it feels like to be in a state of rest and recovery, it's really important (6:13) for your body to find that place. And when you think about sleep, it's more of a bank account (6:19) than you need to add to it.You'll start to feel what it feels like to feel rested. And that's (6:25) where resilience really comes in. H is hydration. We are water. I talk to my customers about this (6:31) all the time. Like what's your water intake look like? But it's also like the things we're putting (6:37) on our body are pulling water out of us.The things that we're eating are pulling water out (6:42) of it. So when you just think of a simple, like, oh, hydration, when you open up the fridge and (6:47) you're like, oh, maybe I'll eat some carrots. That's like a natural hydration. You're not (6:51) looking at it from like a nutritional standpoint, like a hydration standpoint and what not to (6:56) drink. You know, this is really important for my daughter when people are going to the store and (7:01) they're getting their power drinks or, you know, whatever. And she's like, I'm going to pick (7:05) something different. And then A is antioxidants. And I think diets and fads come in and out. (7:13) But when you bring antioxidants into your life, that's like, it's a pretty consistent (7:21) science behind it.And you can think of it from your skincare. You can think about it from your (7:25) food. Think about it from your supplements, antioxidants, your body, and your cells are (7:30) very happy with that. And that also helps from the elimination process. Cause you're like, (7:34) if that's not giving me antioxidants, then it's probably doing the opposite oxidizing. (7:39) Yes.Cellular death. M is mindfulness. And we kind of talked a little bit about this before we went (7:48) on and mindfulness is so powerful. And the journal of behavioral medicine and the journal (7:56) of dermatology recently partnered to demonstrate in a clinical setting that practicing various (8:04) mindfulness moments throughout the day, journaling breath work, focusing on your five senses for as (8:13) little as 30 seconds to two minutes throughout the day. So you don't need to sit and meditate (8:18) for two hours. Cause I think that can be really overwhelming for people. Those micro moments add (8:23) up and cortisol goes down. Inflammation goes down and they literally visibly saw results in people's (8:31) I'm practicing those little mindful moments. And I think getting present also helps you with that, (8:37) like, like discernment of what serves you and what doesn't serve you throughout the day.So (8:42) it makes it a little less overwhelming when you're at the grocery store and you're like, (8:47) okay, which, which lotion am I going to buy? You're just, you're, you're just, you're building (8:54) that mental fitness muscle, which I will add the Yucca app or Yucca app, depending how you say (9:01) great one listeners. If you're not using it already use that app and put it up against (9:06) the product. It'll immediately pop up and it'll give you a rating in terms of (9:13) you know, where it sits from an ingredient standpoint, which leads me to the next a and (9:18) which is avoid, avoid those ingredients. But it's also avoiding situations and avoiding (9:26) maybe a person and giving ourselves permission. We live in a time, especially women, (9:32) where we feel like we have to do everything and it's never enough. And when you give yourself (9:39) permission to just avoid in this like really healthy lane, all of a sudden your energy (9:45) becomes expansive because the things that you were wasting your time and your thoughts (9:49) and your energy on all of a sudden just opens up.Yeah. Yeah. And it's so rewarding. And the last N (9:56) or the last letter is N and it's nature because nature has a beautiful way of grounding us. (10:02) Then it naturally gets us to those five senses very quickly. And so I find that this little (10:08) North star for us in our home allows us to make a lot of those good decisions throughout the day (10:14) without feeling like there's another checklist. There's another thing that we need to burden (10:19) ourselves with, which to your point just adds to that cortisol load. (10:23) Yeah. Yeah.Oh my gosh. I love that. Of course, like the mindfulness piece, (10:27) cause we were just talking about my trip. But yeah, but it's true, you know, (10:31) even just those little micro moments. And like, for me, a big thing that I realized, (10:35) like after coming back from Costa Rica and like I said, I've been increasing or, you know, (10:39) incorporating my, you know, my mindfulness practices, meditation, some journaling, (10:44) whatever it might be. But I don't think I really realized how often I'm like (10:50) eating and scrolling on Facebook or, you know, I think I have a few moments and I want to clear my (10:55) head.So I like put on my Netflix show, you know, but I didn't realize like how much damage that was (11:02) doing and how sitting in silence actually now is so, so much better. And I feel like I've (11:09) been so much more productive of course, you know, because of that. So I love that.I love that, (11:15) that acronym that you guys have. I tell my daughter, I'm like, when you're scrolling, (11:20) you're actually stimulating your skin and stimulating your nervous system. It's real.(11:25) And I love that you bring that up because when, you know, the little shaman on our shoulder, (11:31) for example, you're going to pick up your kiddo from school and you're sitting in the car and (11:36) you've got 10 minutes because you're waiting in line. We always go to our phones or we have one (11:41) more phone call. And I've found by just having that, instead of me saying like, I'm going to (11:47) only be on my screen for X amount of hours because, and this is my new commitment.Instead, (11:54) I just like flow. I'm in that flow state. And so I'm sitting in the car and I'm like, (11:59) you know, I'm going to look at the clouds.I'm going to like, listen to the birds, (12:04) I'm going to hear this down, like again, back to those five senses. And all of a sudden that 10 (12:08) minutes felt like a spa day daughter gets in the car and you're like super present instead of kind (12:14) of that, that scrolling of that energy loss that you just lost in that moment. (12:21) Yeah.Yeah. I've also noticed that just, I notice it so much. It's almost like amplified, (12:28) you know, even if I'm inside and I hear a bird outside, like it's immediately like (12:32) my mind just goes there.Yeah. It's it's great. It's, you know, like you said, (12:38) yeah, it is, it really is.And you invest in the muscle and it finds its way to you the same way (12:46) when you work out your physical body. I have found that when you work out that mindfulness muscle, (12:53) then when you are in a stressful situation, you can ground yourself faster. And when you're in a (12:59) but to your, like you said, like you're in a setting where all of a sudden you can like (13:03) gravitate to that goodness, like cortisol drops.Yeah. Yep. So I do, you know, I do want to kind (13:16) of touch more on the intimate care side as well. You know, you talked about it, but I do want to (13:21) go back to that because I think that is a super important issue, especially for women, you know, (13:26) with PCOS now PMOS, but again, looking at the whole picture and, you know, the, the hormones (13:33) are disrupted and they have, you know, they're dealing with other issues, typically women with (13:40) PCOS that make those intimate moments even more difficult, you know? So yeah. How does that kind (13:49) of fit into the conversation or can you go deeper, you know, into that piece? Well, I'll first say (13:54) that when we started Greenview, we were a couple of years into it and it was our customers who were (14:00) coming to us saying, can I use this for intimate purposes? And at first we thought, well, this is (14:05) kind of strange. And then finally like friends and family came clean and were like, yeah, (14:09) we've kind of been using the dry skincare. We're just wondering. And I thought, okay. So my sister (14:14) and I said, we need to look at this space more clearly. And we found the same parallels as we (14:22) did in the first day that the natural consumer was willing to abandon their natural ethos. (14:27) And the conventional consumer was like, I just want something that works better because a lot (14:33) of these ingredients that we've been used to, they're actually pulling the moisture out of the (14:38) skin. And then it's causing more perpetual dryness and reduced sensitivity as a result of the formulas (14:47) that we've been exposed to.And so we thought, well, all right, let's bring our plant-based (14:52) infusion and let's see if we can come up with better solutions. And I often give people the (14:58) example of like, you know, when you blow up a balloon and then you take some air out and you (15:03) blow it up and then you take some air and you do that a couple of times, all of a sudden, (15:07) like your, your balloon just looks really sad. Well, that's like, that's ourselves on drugs.(15:12) That's our cell being exposed to these things. It's sad. Of course, it's reducing its sensitivity (15:19) and our most intimate areas, those tissues absorb at a very high rate. And so it's going straight (15:27) into our system and so deeply connected to our endocrine system and our hormone balancing. (15:35) I mean, if that's the one place where you have the most connection and already, (15:42) especially if you're suffering from PCOS and PMOS, you're having some of these symptoms (15:57) already more pervasive. And so this is a great opportunity to change that for you.(16:05) And so when you feed your skin, the nutrients that it needs and loves and wants all of a sudden, (16:12) that cell no longer looks like that sad balloon and it truly actually increases sensitivity. (16:18) It's the coolest thing. And so, you know, our, all of our formulas are infused with (16:26) calendula flowers to add antifungal, anti-amnesia, antimicrobial properties.(16:30) But then in addition to that has skin repair and moisturizing properties to it, along with (16:38) things like coconut oil and various other herbs, depending on, you know, what we're looking for. (16:45) But this is an area where I just so encouraged to discontinue any of those harmful chemicals that (16:53) you're bringing into your system, because not only is it localized in terms of your skin health, (16:59) but then how quickly it is going to contribute to that negative feedback loop of the inflammation (17:07) and the hormone miscommunication and misfiring that's happening. Because again, (17:13) we go back to these endocrine disruptors are either blocking your hormone production (17:19) or mimicking it.And then your body has to respond in a different way of which (17:24) hormone should I be releasing? Which again, comes back to that insulin sensitivity (17:30) and then your metabolism being compromised. So again, like you can number one, (17:37) stop contributing to the negative feedback loop. Number two, contribute goodness and like positive (17:43) things to that feedback loop so it can further accelerate your wellness in a positive way.(17:49) Yeah. Oh my gosh. I love that.I feel like we could probably talk about this forever. (17:54) Any, any last notes or thoughts that you'd like to add? (17:59) I think it just comes back to feeling empowered instead of feeling disarmed. (18:06) Because again, the same way you're being inundated with buy this, do this.(18:15) That can be so overwhelming with what should I do? What should I do next? And where do I start? (18:21) So start with empowering yourself and just really getting grounded and centered. (18:26) Explore shaman in your world. And then you can start peeling back the things that don't serve (18:32) you because very quickly, the same way you went on your retreat and you came back into (18:38) your regular setting, you brought those things forward with you.And when you get grounded and (18:44) you feel that sense of empowerment, your body knows what to do. Your body will guide you into, (18:50) you know what? That is not going to serve me. I do not need that. And you'll be surprised when (18:56) you start avoiding some of these other ingredients and you introduce new things. (19:00) The cost actually goes down because no longer do you have all this like one-time stuff and things (19:06) you need to use more. Like I tell people like our balms, like the more you use them, the less (19:10) you need them. You apply lotion on all day long. You will get to a point where you will sab up, (19:16) you will do what I call sanctuary Sunday and you just like sab up from head to toe and you put (19:20) your bathrobe on and you just like let your skin drink it up. You can do that once a week. You (19:25) will get to that place where you built your skin barrier to a place where like you just don't need (19:30) it as much. And so it goes a lot further. Yeah.Yeah. Oh my gosh. I love that.Well, (19:36) thank you so, so much. Last question is how can people connect with you, find you and also (19:43) find the products? Greengoo.com. That's the best spot. You can find this on Amazon as well.(19:49) And feel free to find me at LinkedIn to Jodi A. Scott, but you can email me at the website and (19:54) you'll find me and I welcome, I welcome the discussion. I'd love to help. Awesome.Yes. (20:00) Of course I'll link everything to show notes as well, but thank you so, so much. Oh my gosh.Like (20:04) I said, I feel like we could probably just talk about this topic all day, but yeah, but I appreciate (20:11) you taking the time to be here. Thank you.
